Resilience in Healthcare: Preventing Compassion Fatigue and Supporting Providers After Adverse Events

This presentation explores the vital role of resilience in healthcare, particularly in the face of vicarious trauma, burnout, and critical incidents. Drawing from real-life case examples and grounded in trauma-informed care, it highlights the psychological toll of adverse events on nurses and first responders and offers practical, evidence-based tools to support recovery and well-being. Topics include the biology of trauma, the window of tolerance, and how to support colleagues through nonjudgmental presence, empathy, and narrative healing. Emphasis is placed on mind-body awareness, emotional regulation, and cultivating a culture of shared support where providers can “feel it to heal it.”
